A charity in the north-east of England has helped those feeling isolated during the Covid-19 pandemic with virtual visits from their dogs.

Wag & Company came up with the idea to help combat loneliness when their friendship animals were no longer able to visit elderly people's homes.

Since March, dogs and their volunteers have taken part in video calls, sent cards and even made a 2021 calendar.

Chair Diane Morton said in "sad times" these "little things can really help".

"We're grateful really that we can still make a difference, and relieved we are able to help a little bit," she said.

"Many of our volunteers were very anxious and distressed about their elderly friends.

"Everyone has risen to the challenge of virtual befriending... just trying to make sure that everyone knows we're thinking about them, they're not forgotten and we'll be back
with them just as soon as we can."

Sheila Moody from Durham has been visited by her friendship dog Eddie the lurcher and his volunteer Diane every week since the death of her husband.

The 92-year-old said: "It's companionship and being able to talk to somebody.

"If you've always had dogs, you miss their companionship.

"He [Eddie] is wonderful, he's a very, very good friend to me. In fact, he's my very best friend."

The charity was awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2020 for its community work "ending loneliness for older dog lovers across the north-east of England".

Diane added: "Christmas is massively important. It can be such an emotional time, full of memories, some good, some painful. Many people can do with a distraction,
particularly if they spend a great deal of time alone.

"We can't wait to get back to visiting and in our own simple way, making a difference to people who are just like us, huge dog lovers.

"There's nothing like a furry cuddle especially when you're feeling a bit low."

The new variant of the coronavirus linked to a rapid rise in infections in Britain has been detected on the Portuguese island of Madeira, the first cases of the more contagious variant
found in the country since it emerged.

In a statement on Sunday, the regional civil protection authority said the new variant was "detected in travellers who arrived in Madeira from the United Kingdom" but it did not
specify how many people were infected or when the cases were found.

"This identification was only possible thanks to the work developed by the screening centre at Madeira's international airport which allows to track, identify and forward positive
cases to isolation when detected," it said.

Portugal, with just over 10 million people, has reported 6,619 deaths and a total of 394,573 infections, up by 1,577 cases from Saturday. After a relatively mild first wave, cases
rose sharply in the second, though they have eased recently.

Early analysis of the new variant showed it does not make people more ill and that symptoms were not more severe but it is thought to be more contagious than other currently
circulating variants.

In response to the new variant and like other European Union nations, Portugal announced last week it was closing borders to UK travellers, except to those already registered as
residents and Portuguese citizens living in the United Kingdom.

A further 35 people have died after contracting coronavirus in Wales, taking the total to 3,298, according to the latest figures.

Public Health Wales (PHW) also reported a further 2,237 new cases across the country, which went into lockdown earlier than planned over the weekend.

It takes the number of positive tests to 135,500 since the pandemic began.

PHW warned figures would be higher as it did not report coronavirus cases on Christmas Day.

The figures only show deaths in hospitals and some care homes and only involving confirmed Covid cases.

It means the latest registered deaths reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which take longer to compile and are published on a weekly basis, are significantly
higher at 4,200.

Six of Wales' seven health boards recorded new coronavirus-related deaths in the latest figures, with the most - 13 - reported in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg health board area.

Seven were reported in both Cardiff and Vale and Swansea Bay areas, while there were four in Besti Cadwaladr, which covers north Wales, three in Hywel Dda and one in
the Aneurin Bevan area in the south-east.


Where are the new coronavirus cases?
The latest case rate figures, which covers the week between 14 December and 20 December - when Wales' lockdown came into force - have remained relatively steady.

Merthyr Tydfil continues to have the highest case rate in the country, with 1,241.6 cases per 100,000 people over the last seven days. However this is a slight reduction on
the figure reported on Christmas Eve.

Seventeen of Wales' 22 local authorities reported slightly lower case rates than two days ago.

Only Conwy, Flintshire, Denbighshire, Wrexham and Vale of Glamorgan saw a rise in cases per 100,000 people.

Bridgend remains second highest, with 1,117.3 cases, while Anglesey (60) and Gwynedd (72.3), continue to have the lowest Covid rates in Wales.


Why are figures lower in Powys?
Acute patients from Powys are usually treated across the border at hospitals in England, so deaths of Powys residents usually only appear in registrations reported later by
the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Those ONS figures - which are higher - also count both confirmed and suspected cases of Covid, as well as deaths in all settings, including care homes, hospices and
people's own homes. The most recent weekly figures are the highest since May.

Tighter coronavirus restrictions are set to be introduced in Scotland from 26 December, with most of the country placed in level four of the country's five-tier system of
coronavirus restrictions.

The current rules will remain in place until then, but plans to relax the restrictions over Christmas have been scaled back. Household bubbles will only be allowed on
Christmas day itself, and people will only be allowed to travel outside Scotland for essential purposes.


Which level is your area in?
The new restrictions will take effect from Saturday 26 December and will last for three weeks. Every part of mainland Scotland will be in level four, while level three will apply
in Orkney, Shetland, the Western Isles and the more remote islands in Argyll and Bute and the Highlands.

Until then, the levels are:

Level three - Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Clackmannanshire, Dundee, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Fife, Glasgow,

What are the rules for pubs and restaurants?
All pubs, restaurants and cafes must close in level four areas, although they can still serve takeaways.

In all the other levels, a maximum of six people from two households can meet together in hospitality venues, either indoors or outdoors.

Customers have to provide their contact details in case contact tracers need to reach them, and must wear face coverings while moving around and when not eating or
drinking.

It is mandatory for staff to wear face coverings, and there can only be table service.

In level one, the only additional restriction is that hospitality premises have to close at 22:30.

In level two, pubs and restaurants can only serve alcohol with a main meal indoors and must close by 20:00. Outdoors, alcohol can be consumed without a meal and
venues must close at 22:30.

In level three, premises will be allowed to open - but no alcohol can be sold, and they must close at 18:00.

Police patrols on Scotland's borders are to be doubled but there are no plans for checkpoints or road blocks.

Police Scotland's chief constable said he expected roads to be quieter in the coming days and that most people would "do the right thing".

But Iain Livingstone ruled out setting up checkpoints, saying they were not "appropriate" or "proportionate".

The first minister announced on Saturday that cross-border travel would be banned for the festive period.

Nicola Sturgeon said tighter travel rules were essential, along with a number of extra measures, to prevent a new variant of Covid-19 spreading rapidly.

There are only a limited number of specific exemptions to the law.

In addition to the cross-border travel ban, the whole of Scotland will move into either level four or level three Covid restrictions from 26 December, meaning people are only
allowed to make essential journeys outside their council area.

The chief constable said he had compassion for all those affected by "highly restrictive measures" but insisted they were "absolutely necessary" to save lives.

"Following the announcement by the first minister, there can be no doubt that, other than for the most essential journeys, people should not be travelling between Scotland
and other parts of the UK," he said.


'Proportionate' policing
Mr Livingstone said the increase in Covid alert levels from midnight on 26 December amounted to a "blanket ban" for mainland Scotland.

But he added: "I remain clear I do not consider it appropriate or proportionate for officers to establish check points or road blocks to simply enforce travel restrictions

"These restrictions are a preventative measure to halt the progress of Covid and Police Scotland will support this approach with a strong operational profile to deter those
who would put others at risk.

"Today, I have authorised the doubling of our operational presence in the border areas of Scotland."

He said the force's experience throughout the pandemic was that the "overwhelming majority" of people had "demonstrated personal responsibility to do the right thing".

He added: "It is the consent of the public from which policing in Scotland draws its legitimacy. As our communities expect, where officers encounter wilful, persistent or
flagrant breaches we will act decisively to enforce the law."
